How Does Dermaplaning Help Skin Shine?

As humans moved away from our primate ancestors, we gained opposable thumbs and lost a lot of body hair, but not all. Despite showing far more skin, humans are still covered with much finer hair called vellus hair, or peach fuzz. Interestingly, this hair grows everywhere except for the palms of your hands, soles of your feet, eyelids, and lips.
Although peach fuzz might not be noticeable on some people, for others, this fine hair can cast a shadow over their skin, making it less vibrant looking.
The good news is that the experienced aesthetic team here at Orange Coast Dermatology offers dermaplaning, which can make quick work of peach fuzz (and other surface issues) that make your skin look duller and more tired than it should.
The role of peach fuzz
Before we get into dermaplaning, we want to circle back to peach fuzz and the role it plays on your body.
These fine hairs are largely designed to help your body regulate temperature. They can also trap outside irritants to prevent them from gaining access to your body.
Some people have barely noticeable vellus hair, though you might notice it more on others. This is largely due to genetics and what type of hair you’ve inherited. For example, darker-haired people might have more noticeable peach fuzz as its coloring is darker.
This doesn’t mean that fair-haired people aren’t affected cosmetically by peach fuzz — many blondes have an abundance of noticeable peach fuzz across their faces.
Dermaplaning can bring out a new glow in your skin
Many issues can make your skin look more dull and tired, including obvious ones like aging and wrinkles. That said, many of our clients are amazed by how much peach fuzz can dull the natural glow in your skin by burying it under the vellus hair.
Through dermaplaning, we use a specialized tool called a dermatome to clear away the peach fuzz on your face to reveal your bright, smooth skin below. This close shave also clears away dead skin cells to pave the way for new growth.
There are many great benefits of dermaplaning, such as:
- Dermaplaning is minimally invasive — we only remove the outermost skin cells
- Dermaplaning also works for acne scarring
- Dermaplaning is great for all skin types
- The treatment can also remove rough skin patches
In most cases, dermaplaning takes us less than an hour to complete, and there’s no downtime afterward, so you can get right back to your day. You might experience some temporary redness and soreness in your face, but these side effects shouldn’t last long.
Within a day or two, you’ll be thrilled to see vibrant skin on your face that isn’t hidden by a veil of fine hair or rough skin.
