Can Microneedling Reduce My Acne Scars?

Can Microneedling Reduce My Acne Scars?

Acne is a common complaint among adolescents and young adults all over the world, causing angst over unsightly pimples and lasting damage from acne scarring. Our culture considers smooth, unmarked skin beautiful. When your skin deviates from the norm, it’s understandable that you can feel embarrassed and self-conscious.

If you’re bothered by scars from teenage acne, modern dermatology can significantly improve your skin’s appearance. Our expert cosmetic dermatologists with Orange Coast Dermatology provide professional microneedling that resurfaces your skin and smooths away the uneven edges of your skin around your scars.

Why do acne scars form?

Healthy skin depends on fresh supplies of collagen, a major skin protein. If you have recessed scars that look like little craters in your skin, your body has produced too little collagen. If you have raised scars, your body has produced too much of the protein.

What can I do about acne scarring?

Perhaps you’ve already tried topical creams to help even out your appearance, but they haven’t solved the problem. Dermal fillers can help smooth out uneven skin, but they really only mask the problem, and they don’t last forever.

Chemical peels are fairly effective at reducing the look of acne scars, but don’t reach the root cause of the scarring. Microneedling provides a superior technique that helps smooth your uneven skin surface.

During a consultation with your Orange Coast dermatologist, we ask you about your goals and what you’d like to improve. We also review your medical history. Your doctor explains which treatment options are going to provide the best solution for you.

How does microneedling help improve acne scarring?

Microneedling is a proven technique to improve a number of skin imperfections, including acne scarring. It uses collagen induction therapy to bring out a smoother, brighter complexion.

You lie comfortably on a sterilized surface. We clean your skin thoroughly and apply a topical numbing agent to prevent discomfort from the treatment.

Your dermatologist uses a device called a dermaroller to make microscopic wounds in tiny rows across your skin. Your immune system goes to work, rushing fresh collagen to the area and creating healthy new skin cells.

Microneedling breaks up and softens any excess collagen on your skin’s surface and resurfaces the entire area. The new skin that replaces it is much smoother and softer, even after a single treatment. Each session takes about 20 minutes, and your doctor gives you aftercare information customized to your needs.

Treating your acne scars can give your self-confidence a boost. You’re no longer thinking about your facial imperfections. They’ve been whisked away.
