What Is PRP Therapy?
No matter how carefully you care for your skin, at some point, wrinkles, fine lines, and other telltale signs of aging are eventually going to catch up with you.
That might sound kind of grim. But the good news is, today there are more options than ever for restoring your skin so it looks and feels firmer, smoother, and more youthful.
At Orange Coast Dermatology, our PRP therapy treatments help our patients in Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo, California, turn back the clock on aging skin, so they look and feel more confident.
PRP therapy doesn’t use incisions and there’s no prolonged recovery time — two big reasons why it’s popular among both women and men. How popular? Last year, more than 130,000 PRP cosmetic treatments were administered across the United States.
Here’s how PRP therapy can help your skin look its best.
What is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, a product that’s made from a sample of your own blood. Like red and white blood cells, platelets are tiny components of your blood, and they play a very important role in healing and tissue repair.
Each platelet contains proteins called growth factors that help stimulate your skin’s natural healing responses to repair damage and restore healthy tissue.
We offer PRP treatments right in our office, and treatments can be repeated to help you maintain your results. After your treatment, you can go back to your normal activities because there’s no downtime.
And since PRP is made from your own blood, you don’t have to worry about allergic reactions that can occur with some other products.
How PRP works
In PRP therapy, we extract a small sample of your blood, then place it in a special device that separates the platelets and the plasma (the liquid part of your blood) from red and white blood cells and other components.
We combine the concentrated platelets with some of your plasma and apply it to your skin. Afterward, the growth factors go to work recruiting other cells to help repair damaged tissue, so your skin looks and feels smoother, firmer, and more resilient.
PRP also helps your skin rebuild collagen, one of the important building blocks of healthy skin. It’s collagen that helps your skin feel firm and resilient when you’re younger. But as you age, your skin produces less collagen, resulting in textural changes, sagging, and fine lines.
PRP helps boost production of natural collagen, restoring lost elasticity and firmness while evening out skin texture.
PRP isn’t just for age-related skin damage. It can also be a good option for people with acne or rosacea.
At Orange Coast Dermatology, we use the state-of-the-art Eclipse® PRP system, designed to separate platelets more effectively, while eliminating red and white blood cells for a purer product and more predictable, desirable results.
Help your skin look its radiant best
Wrinkles and fine lines might be natural consequences of getting older, but that doesn’t mean you need to just sit back and accept those changes. With PRP, you can restore your skin and help it stay healthy by repairing underlying damage and replenishing lost collagen.
